Rehearsal Notes 10/31

MENDELSSOHN

Strings, count and keep temp at bar 96.

Winds, don’t forget the diminuendo in bar 119.  

Slight relaxation of the tempo at bar 123.  

Very light and soft at bar 149.  Don’t accent the last beat of the motif (beat 4 of bar 149 for strings; beat 2 of bar 150 for winds).

Second violins have the melody at bar 155.  

At bar 186, brass and clarinet change dynamic to mezzo-piano.  Tempo may relax ever so slightly, but will recover on beat 3 of bar 187.  

Violas have the melody at bar 215.  

At bar 216, beat 4 will be in the new tempo (of the animato).  

Tempo will be a little free in the last 5 bars of the piece, so watch carefully.  

BEETHOVEN

Mvt. I:

Don’t drag at rehearsal M.

At bar 444, don’t leave out any of the sfzorzandi.

At letter O, “laser-sharp” precision.  ‘Mezzo-forte’ at O, then ‘forte’ 8-before Rehearsal P.

Two bars before Rehearsal P, add a staccato to the first 8th note.

At rehearsal P, there needs to be a completely new mood.

Slight stretch of the tempo at bar 501.

Strings can play out at bar 524.  

Don’t let up on the sforzandi leading into Rehearsal R.  

No ritardando at the end of the movement.  

Celli/basses play “extra short” at bar 659.

In bar 685, more space needed between beats 1 and 2.

Mvt. II:

At Rehearsal B, “if you wait for the other section to finish you’ll be late”.  

Practice this movement with a metronome.  Dotted half=116.

Strings watch the tuning at bar 57.

Celli/basses, move together at bar 243.

Horns need more space between notes at bar 260.

A little lighter on accents at bar 317.  

Mvt. IV:

Drop the tied 16th note on beat 2 of bar 1.  

No separation at the fermata in bar 57.

Slight tenuto on 8th note on ‘&’ of beat 2 in bar 57.

“Bell tones” at bar 119 (on the half notes).

“Not delicate” at bar 201.

Keep the tempo steady at bars 258/259.

Tempos

The beginning: 100= quarter

Letter B– 66-72 to the half noet

Letter C– back in first tempo

Quasi adagio- 60= quarter

Letter E– 96= quarter

Allegretto vivace– 126-132= quarter

Allegro marziale– 144= quarter

Letter K– slower and broader at trombone entrance

Next key change– 66= half note

Letter M- Piu mosso– 76= half note

Alla breve after Letter N– 80= half note

Piu presto- 88= half note

Presto after Letter P– 96= half note

BEETHOVEN

Mvt. I

Be careful not to drag on the main theme.  

Don’t overplay at bar 37.  Violins hang back.   

At bar 45, a full quarter note is needed at the end of the main motif.  

More viola, cello, clarinet, and bassoon at bar 57.

At bar 65, violins “crescendo down”.  

Tenuto at bar 87.  

At bar 240, add a little more “space” before each sforzando.  Listen to how all the parts fit together rhythmically.  

Don’t “hit-fade” at four-bars before Rehearsal I.  

At Rehearsal I, “heavier” and a little “held back,” then recover tempo at bar 287.  

Mvt. II

Overall, time must stay steady.

More “attitude” on the grace notes at the beginning.  

At bar 37, strings a little more tenuto on the eighth notes.

At bar 63, violins less “edge” to the sound on the F#.

At bar 73, more bassoon.

Add “forte” to the end of bar 103.

At bar 114, be “clawing” at every note.

At bar 151, more tenuto.

Move the “piano” in bar 153 to 154.  

Mvt. III

2nd violins and violas match A-flats at bar 31.  

Note:  Rehearsal B is at bar 127.  

Don’t drag at Rehearsal B.  

 

MENDELSSOHN

More viola at bar 33.  Make sure the triplet on beat 1 of bar 33 does not become an eighth followed by two 16ths.

At bar 39, bassoon and clarinet be careful not to drag.  

At bar 45, trumpets be a little more separated.  

More brass at bar 77.  Make sure the brass 16th notes fit rhythmically with the 16th notes in the strings.  

A little more separation on beat 3 and beat 4 quarter notes at bar 77.

3rd movement:  ‘in 4’ at 10-bars-after Rehearsal ‘I’.

Please practice with metronome at home.

BEETHOVEN

Mvt. I

Every sforzando should be preceded by a lift.

“Different sections should have different characters”.

Rehearsal ‘N’ should feel like chamber music–“match each other”.

“Rounder tone” and tenuto at bar 490.

Mvt. II

Conducted in ‘4’.

Violins, a bit softer at bar 69.

“Sting” the sforzandi starting at bar 115.

Mvt. III

“Macro” conducting pattern is ‘in 2’.

Take all repeats.

The pulse stays the same at the ‘Alla breve”.  (Dotted-half=whole note).

Mvt. IV

In ‘2’.

Take all repeats.

Bar 351 will be conducted in ‘4’.

‘Presto’ tempo will be quarter=116
